Don't Trash the 'Nati

Wow, it's been an action packed week without a break in order to update my blog.

Todd's 24th birthday was on March 1. His mom called him on February 28th to ask how it felt on his last day of being 22. He said that it was great last year. It must be embarrassing if your own mom can't remember how old you are. My uncle thought I was 25 this year. Nope, sorry Steve, I'm only 22.

Also on Todd's birthday I went on my very first hospital accompaniment for work. Whenever a sexual assault victim goes to the hospitals around here, the social workers call our agency (24 hours a day) and we send an advocate out to the hospital. My first trip was on Wednesday. It was very nerve wracking, I didn't want to mess anything up and I wanted to be as comforting as possible. I can't, for obvious reasons, say anything about it but it was an intense experience. Everybody at work asked me if I was okay afterward which I thought was a strange thing to ask. I am fine, but I need to learn to be empathetic without becoming too emotionally invested. I will burn myself out if I don't. I really have an awesome job.

I was able to do community presentations this week as well. I'm glad that I don't always have to do presentations - but I enjoy doing them every once in a while. On Friday I went to a local all-girls Catholic High School to talk about dating violence and date rape. It was great! The teacher was so fun and the girls were all so smart and respectful.

Hi Kim; this is Tanya's sister Sonya. Just wanted to let you know that I volunteered for the Sexual Assault Prevention Center's Crisis Line/Outreach program here at UM for 3 years in college and did a lot of outreaches to the hospital for survivors. It is certainly some of the most challenging work I've ever done so if you have any questions or anything just let me know. Cheers!
